BANNED BOOK INITIATIVE

As part of the 20th Birthday celebration of the Stirling Road Library, the Friends  are giving away a selection of books that have been the subject of bans or challenges for you to take home and keep, thanks to a group of private donors. Pick up a free book on Sunday, July 9th, at Stirling Road Library while supplies last!

Support for this type of initiative can be found throughout Broward County.  “A vital part of my mission is to ensure that the freedom to read is not compromised,” Library Director Allison Grubbs wrote in a statement. “The right to think, speak and learn freely are foundational values in our democracy and in our libraries.”

The Stirling Road Library, together with all other Broward County Library branches,  has created a  “Book Sanctuary.” Book Sanctuaries are designated areas where endangered stories will be protected and made accessible for exploration or checkout.

More information can be found at::American Library Association (ALA): The ALA is a prominent organization that actively supports intellectual freedom and fights against censorship. Their Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) maintains a Banned & Challenged Books webpage with a wealth of resources, including lists of frequently challenged books, statistics, and tips on how to deal with challenges.
